Globus Metal Powders

High-Purity Metal Powders Optimised for PM-HIP

At Globus Metal Powders, we provide high-purity, ultra-low oxygen metal powders specifically designed to deliver exceptional performance in Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) applications. HIP – often referred to as PM-HIP when used in Powder Metallurgy (PM) – is a critical powder metallurgy process that combines high temperature and isostatic pressure to consolidate powders or cast components into fully dense, near-net-shape parts. This process eliminates residual porosity, enhances mechanical properties, and produces homogeneous microstructures, making it essential for aerospace, defence, oil & gas, marine, and power generation applications.

Using Globus powders in PM-HIP allows manufacturers to optimise densification, minimise defects, and achieve predictable performance. Our powders are engineered to enhance consolidation efficiency, reduce oxide inclusions, and improve fatigue and creep resistance, ensuring components meet or exceed stringent industry standards.

HOW PM-HIP WORKS

During PM-HIP, powder is enclosed in a sealed capsule and exposed to high isostatic pressure, typically applied via an inert gas such as argon, at elevated temperatures. The simultaneous action of pressure and heat promotes diffusion bonding between powder particles, eliminating voids and producing a fully dense, uniform microstructure.

The quality of the metal powder directly influences PM-HIP outcomes:

  • Particle morphology and size distribution affect packing density and diffusion efficiency.
  • Powder chemistry and impurity levels control the formation of oxide films or internal voids that could compromise mechanical properties.
  • Consistency from batch to batch ensures repeatable consolidation and reliable performance in critical applications.
HOW PM-HIP WORKS

BENEFITS OF GLOBUS METAL POWDERS IN PM-HIP

1. Ultra-Low Oxygen and Nitrogen Content

  • Reduces formation of oxide inclusions and interstitial compounds.
  • Improves ductility, toughness, fatigue resistance, creep strength, and overall part reliability.

2. Optimised Particle Morphology

  • Spherical, uniform powders promote high packing density.
  • Enhances flowability and uniform consolidation during powder filling and PM-HIP cycles.

3. Consistent Chemistry and Traceability

  • Supports critical applications in aerospace, defence, oil & gas, marine, and power generation.
  • Ensures predictable microstructure and mechanical performance, batch after batch.

4. Improved Consolidation Efficiency and Yield

  • Minimises internal voids and defects, reducing scrap and post-processing.
  • Facilitates the production of high-integrity components such as turbine discs, pressure vessels, and structural components.

5. Enhanced Dimensional Accuracy

  • Lower defect levels mean less machining and finishing are required.
  • Parts retain their near-net-shape geometry, improving production efficiency.

APPLICATIONS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

PM-HIP is widely applied in industries where component integrity and reliability are mission-critical:
  • Aerospace: Turbine disks, engine casings, and structural components requiring high fatigue life, thermal stability, and lightweight strength.
  • Oil & Gas / Power Generation: Manifolds, pressure vessels, and valves capable of withstanding high pressure, temperature, and corrosive environments.
  • Defence / Marine: Armoured components, naval hardware, and marine fittings where mechanical toughness and corrosion resistance are essential.

By pairing Globus high-purity powders with PM-HIP, manufacturers gain components that meet stringent mechanical, chemical, and regulatory standards, ensuring reliable performance over the entire service life.
